engineering:Now in Labs: Full-screen messaging on webMessages on web live in small popovers: both the list of messages, and the message window itself. That’s fine for a quick reply, but it gets cramped when you’re keeping up with a lot of conversations, so we built a full-screen version.Full-screen messaging gives your DMs more space: your conversation list on the left, the open conversation on the right. Of course, you can switch between your blogs, start a new chat, send GIFs and images, and block or report a conversation. To try it, enable it in Labs → Full-screen messaging. Once it’s on,…

Hey there 👀 @jubs here… our team was chatting about how “Inbox” and “Messages” can be too similar terms, and can be easily confused with each other.should we rename “Inbox” to something else?askssubmissionscontributionsplease keep it “Inbox”something else (say in the comments / tags)See Resultscurious to hear your thoughts…
Want more control over which new messages get your attention? If you enable Message Requests in Labs, you’ll get a new section in your Messages menu to catch messages from blogs you don’t follow or haven’t messaged before. This only applies if your blog’s “Who can message me” setting is Everyone.Message Requests won’t send you a notification or add to your Inbox’s unread count, they wait until you decide what to do with them. Accept it to move it to your inbox, or report or delete it.Available in Labs on web and iOS today, and on Android next week. Make sure you’re on the latest version of…
engineering:Coming soon to the mobile apps: Inbox tab in Activity Ever wondered where to find your blog’s received asks and submissions on the mobile app? They’re in settings, which takes a lot of taps to get to, especially if you have multiple blogs. We heard some feedback on our recent update to settings on Android that you wanted easier access to your Inbox. So, we’re working on moving the Inbox to your Activity screen. This was something we worked on during Hack Days in March, so while we put the finishing touches on it, tell us what you think of this change! This is now rolling out on…
You might see a new option to sort comments on web, in addition to chronological sorting options: Best comments first. We want to make it easier to find interesting conversation, and demote spammy comments. Look for this option in the comments view on any post, only on web for now. We’re still testing and fine-tuning how this works, so your feedback is welcome — leave it below!

engineering:Now in Labs on Android: Settings redesignTumblr has tons of settings, and in the app, most of them are in a single list under “General Settings”. We cleaned up the layout and reorganized to make browsing preferences and notifications easier to find, put all your blog and communities settings in one place, and added a few options that were previously web-only.If you use an Android device, make sure you’re using version 45.2 of the Tumblr app, and you can switch on the new settings area in Labs -> Redesigned Settings. You might need to restart the app to see changes. Got feedback?…

engineering:Where’s that comment?Hello Tumblr! @jubs here, today, to tell you about a feature we’re building: Comments by author!Comments (or replies) have been around for a while, but they have always been tucked away from your regular feed, and so we’re working on a few ways to integrate them into the rest of our experience.Soon, blogs will have a Comments tab alongside Posts, Likes, and Following. There, you will be able to see posts other people have been commenting on, and, more importantly, find your own comments! This was not possible before, except through notifications if someone…

Once again, it was Hack Day at Tumblr, our favorite excuse to pause the roadmap for a moment and build something weird, useful, or ideally both. Here is a sneak peek of what the team built.Unified Inbox@ex, @kostastsi4 and @alexjf worked on making Asks and Submissions easier to find in the apps, moving your Inbox (currently buried in blog settings) to a tab in the Activity screen, where all your other incoming communication lives.Gifs in repliesIn @elt’s opinion, replies could use some spicing up. So he spent Hack Day adding GIF support to replies. Neat! Fun fact: reply threads themselves…
engineering: The reblog is a beautiful thing unique to Tumblr – often imitated, but never successfully reproduced elsewhere. The reblog puts someone else’s post on your own Tumblr blog, acting as a kind of signal boost, and also giving you the ability to add your own comment to it, which your followers and anyone looking at the post’s notes will see. Reblogs can also be reblogged themselves, creating awesome evolving reblog trails that are the source of so many memes we love. But what is a reblog trail versus a reblog tree, and how does it all work under the hood?A “reblog tree” starts at the…
Hack days are when our team gets to step away from the regular roadmap and work on whatever ideas they so desire. Here’s a taste of what came out of it:Advanced SearchWe added advanced search operators in a previous Hack Day. This time, @lesianlen added an exclusion operator to exclude posts that contain a specific word, phrase, or tag. @ex and @blowery helped out to add a spiffy modal that shows exactly how you can use all available advanced search operators. Search in CommunitiesSpeaking of search, @lesianlen also worked on adding search within individual Communities to find posts and…
Once again it was Hack Day at Tumblr! You’ve probably seen one of these posts before. A couple of times per year we slow down our normal work and spend a day working on scratching a personal itch or features we want as user and see how far we can get with our hacks. One thing from the last Hack Week in January made it out: new default blog avatars! Here are some of the projects that got built for our most recent Hack Day in September. Some of these things you may also end up seeing on the site… and one of them isn’t included here because it’ll likely be a fun Halloween surprise. 👻Advanced…
Once again it was Hack Week (more than just a day!) at Tumblr! This is getting repetitive in the best way. A couple of times per year we slow down our normal work and spend a week working on scratching a personal itch or features we want as user and see how far we can get with our hacks. One thing from the last Hack Week in September made it all the way to a new experiment out to some testers: Tumblr Patio! Here are some of the projects that got built for our most recent Hack Week in January. StreamBuilder: our open-source framework for powering your dashboard.Today, we’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re open-sourcing the custom framework we built to power your dashboard on Tumblr. We call it StreamBuilder, and we’ve been using it for many years.First things first. What is open-sourcing? Open sourcing is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. In more accessible language, it is any program whose source code is made available for use or modification as users or other developers see fit. What, then, is StreamBuilder? Well, every time…
